Commissioned by Project 39A, National Law University Delhi

Venue: India International Centre, New Delhi

Date: 20 September, 2023

The launch of the online exhibition, CAPITAL LETTERS, was conceptualised and curated as a multilayered event titled, "You Know I Can't Say More." A mixed media art installation transformed the genteel environs of the India International Centre in New Delhi to a claustrophobic chamber of emotions from death row prisoners in India. Multiple digital projections movingly drew audiences into the dark experiences of the prisoners. And in the midst of it all (and the audience) were hundreds of physical letters from death row that had made their way through prison bars.

This dark, disturbing environment made a perfect setting for two powerful performances. A solo performative work by eminent theatre artist Maya Rao, titled, "You Want to Know my Story?" and a live performance by the renowned Indian classical vocalist T M Krishna. Two voices that spoke to the the vulnerabilities and struggles of the hundreds of men and women that India has placed on death row. Two performances that challenged our apathy and silence. Two leading thinkers of our time, who provoke us to think of the human cost of turning a blind eye or worse yet, forgetting those who are waiting to be executed in our name.
