workshops | gender. kala. aur hum 2025

Venue: Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy and Politics, Himachal Pradesh
Dates: 15-18 January 2025

A series of art appreciation workshops, with three specific artforms at their core, through which we looked at issues of gendered lives and living and how they can be expressed. Focussing on digital performances, writing and mixed media work, the workshops deconstructed various artworks to think about their fundamental elements/ constituents/ qualities and how they frame diverse concerns and issues, while offering a broad framework to employ while engaging with art as both tool and outcome.

Round 2 of reFrame's four-day residential art appreciation workshop, Gender. Kala. Aur Hum. which welcomed 15 amazing participants who came together to create a safe and trusting space for interaction. The workshop focussed on digital performance, writing and mixed media exploring the idea of using art for the articulation of political visions and lived realities, as well as a means of generating dialogue and fostering social change, with a focus on gender and its diverse and complex.

Interactive and enriching sessions with resource people - gender queer writer and activist, Shals Mahajan, who conducted a writing workshop using children's storybook and writer Jacinta Kerketta's selected works to unpack gender, its implicit and explicit hierarchies; and queer feminist activist, researcher and activist Chayanika Shah, who led an insightful session on caste, gender and sexuality.

The workshop concluded with participants sharing their remarkable and heartwarming artistic outputs in the form of a short film, a play, a theatrical reading of a children's book, stand up comedy, short written pieces, mixed media craft, animated video, and spoken word performance, all created at the workshop.
