Lens based art appreciation course

A lens-based art appreciation course across two weekends that will introduce you to how anything from the mobile phone in your hand to the most sophisticated camera holds immense possibilities for you to create lens based art, and that could be anything: still photography, films, digital performances, installation art, music videos, and so much more. 

 

The teaching material will be contemporary artistic creations by young and emerging artists that speaks vividly about their own, or their subject's lives. Using these, as well as discussions and conversations as a springboard, you will dive into creating your own work, around your lives and experiences. All through, you will of course be mentored by us!

Course Structure

Day 1 - 6 September, Saturday 

11 am – 1 pm 

  • Introduction by team reFrame

  • Storytelling through still photography by photographer Dinesh Khanna

1 pm - 2 pm

  • Lunch

 

2 pm – 4 pm

  • Reimagining narratives through digital performance by team reFrame

 

Day 2 - 7 September, Sunday

11 am – 1 pm 

  • Reframing discourses through films by Vani Subramanian

 

1 pm -2 pm

  • Lunch

 

2 pm – 4 pm

  • Interactive session on the story that the participants want to tell through their art

 

Day 3 - 13 September, Saturday 

11 am – 1 pm

  • Exploring possibilities with experimental lens based works by Vani Subramanian

  • Review and feedback of participants' work-in-progress artwork with mentors

 

1 pm - 2 pm

  • Lunch

 

2 pm – 4 pm

  • Mentoring and working with participants on their work-in-progress artwork 

 

Day 4 - 14 September, Sunday

11 am – 1 pm 

  • Sharing of the final works with the group

  • Review by peers and mentors

  • Sharing of the final works with the group 

  • Review by peers and mentors

Mentors

The workshops will be conducted by filmmaker Vani Subramanian, photographer Dinesh Khanna and members of reFrame.

 

Dinesh Khanna is a photographer with over 35 years of experience across commercial, editorial, and personal work. His acclaimed books include Bazaar, Living Faith, Right of the Line, and Life in Rashtrapati Bhawan. He has worked on major advertising campaigns like Incredible India and exhibited internationally. A Co-founder of the Delhi Photo Festival and Managing Trustee of Nazar Foundation, he also teaches widely and is Director of the Dhrish Academy of Photography at Museo Camera.  

Vani Subramanian is a feminist activist and award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work explores the politics of everyday life—from gender and justice to memory and space. Her films have been screened widely in India and abroad, and her practice spans video art, installations, and digital shows. She has taught at institutions including Cornell University, SPA Delhi, Sushant School of Architecture, and Mahatma Gandhi Hindi University. Vani is the Creative Director of reFrame Institute of Art and Expression.

My Kahaani, Camera ki Zubaani is organised by the reFrame Institute of Art and Expression, New Delhi, in collaboration with Museo Camera, Gurugram.

reFrame is an initiative that produces, mentors and disseminates artistic efforts that respond to contemporary social and political challenges. Celebrating the collective energies of diverse art/s and artists, we activate dialogues across disciplines, platforms and practices. We facilitate deliberations on critical social questions and carry forward public culture projects, pedagogical initiatives, festivals and other interactive programmes that strengthen the voices of independent art and artists of our times. 

The journey of Museo Camera began in 2009 in the basement of Photographer, Historian, Archivist, Aditya Arya as a personal collection of Photographic equipment. Today it is the largest not-for-profit crowd funded Centre for Photographic Arts in South East Asia. A unique public - private partnership between India Photo Archive Foundation and The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram - it is one of a kind in India with 18,000 sq. ft. of space dedicated to the art of Photography.
